Rhythm World is Chicago’s annual festival of tap and percussive dance, celebrating its 29th year! Each summer, many of the world’s finest tap dance teachers and performers educate, entertain and enlighten students and audiences from around the globe through classes, performances and more.

Rhythm World offers a sophisticated and comprehensive variety of education and performance programs that allow students and audience members to design their own experiences. Students can take a single class or immerse themselves in up to 50 hours during the week.

Audience members will have the opportunity to enjoy 6 different nights of percussive and rhythmic arts at some of Chicago’s most cherished venues. Opening night at the Jazz Showcase, JUBA! Concerts at the Dance Center of Columbia College and free performances & TAP JAM at Navy Pier Polk Bros. Performance Lawns followed by their weekly fireworks spectacular!

Youth Tap Ensemble Conference (YTEC) | July 22-25 | Mon – Thurs
>>CHRP’s annual Youth Tap Ensemble Conference (YTEC), now in its 19th year, is a training and repertory development program for pre-professional tap repertory companies. This year’s program has been completely re-imagined, with classes in tap choreography, body percussion, boomwhackers composition, tap and live instrument composition and improvisation. The 2019 YTEC choreographers will be Kilian Deissler and Dani Borak.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION | JULY 22-25 | Mon – Thurs
>>The Teacher Certification program covers elements of tap history, repertory, pedagogy, physiology and music theory. This program is taught by Linda Sohl Ellison, Dianne Walker, Bril Barrett and Jason Janas.

KIDS PROGRAM* | JULY 22-25 | Mon – Thurs
>>Faculty: Demi Remick, Monti Ellison, Sean Kaminski
Don’t miss this exciting opportunity for kids to accelerate to
the next level! The curriculum of this program will cover: oral
and video histories; rudiments of tap including technique,
timing, syncopated rhythms, and improvisational skills; and the
developments of each dancer’s individual style and expressive
ability.

*Program includes twelve classes, one ticket to a JUBA! concert and a festival t-shirt.

OTHER PROGRAMS OFFERED INCLUDE four day courses, Friday Workshops, weekend masterclasses AND adult courses.

The Birthday Bash continues! M.A.D.D. Rhythms is proud to present a tribute to an American music icon, Nina Simone featuring new choreography from M.A.D.D. Rhythms dancers, performances by Chicago Jazz greats Maggie Brown, Joan Collaso, Tecora Rogers, Felena Bunn, and arrangements by Ben Jammin Johnson. With Feeling Good: A MADD Tribute to Nina Simone we invite Nina’s creative voice back to the conversation and honor her contributions through the art of Tap Dance. Presented in partnership with M.A.D.D. Rhythms.

On April 20th, M.A.D.D. RHYTHMS is proud to present an evening of virtuosity for the first time at Links Hall. The evening features a world premiere by company member Tristan Bruns, brand new works by company members Starinah Dixon and Donnetta Jackson and some MADD Rhythms “back-by-popular-demand” fan favorites! This performance is presented by Links Hall as part of their 40th Anniversary LINKAGE program.

M.A.D.D. RHYTHMS is a phenomenal TAPdance collective whose “SOLE” purpose is to spread the Love and Joy of TAP worldwide. What started as Bril Barrett & Martin Dumas III’s formula for giving back, is now a full-fledged performing arts company, quickly gaining a reputation for representing the true essence of tap: RHYTHM! The company is composed of young, versatile tap dancers from all over Chicago. Their ages range from 13 to 42, and their backgrounds are as equally diverse. The one thing they all have in common is a love for “the dance”.

Tristan Bruns’ What It’s Like To Be Human @ Links Hall

What It’s Like To Be Human is a new work by choreographer Tristan Bruns with additional choreography by collaborators Megan Davis, Jessica Tenbusch, Rachel Benzing and Kaytlin Bush. Following the performance will be a Q+L (Question and Listen) session and the comments you provide will directly affect the direction of the work in future performances. What It’s Like To Be Human is a part of the Links Hall 40th Anniversary LINKAGES program.

The main performance of What It’s Like To Be Human is April 19th at 7pm and is part of the Stomping Grounds Percussive Dance Festival presented by the Chicago Human Rhythm Project.

There will be a preview performance on Thursday, April 18th at 7pm and an invitation only matinee performance on Friday, April 19th at 2pm.

All ticket prices range from a standard $8 ticket, a $15 support the artist ticket and $40 support the artist AND Links Hall ticket.

​STOMPING GROUNDS is a two-month, City-wide festival presented in distinct communities throughout Chicago showcasing many of the city’s most accomplished percussive dance companies. Throughout the festival, unique combinations of artists from multiple ensembles perform and teach in schools, community cultural centers and in a grand finale at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

LINKS HALL encourages artistic innovation and public engagement by maintaining a facility and providing flexible programming for the research, development and presentation of new work in the performing arts.

Chicago Human Rhythm Project builds community through American tap and contemporary percussive arts in world class, innovative performance, education and outreach programs.
